Back to Writing: I’ve Adopted Substack
“Every hour love's bones grow lighter.” —Ruth Stone
Last year, when I launched my business Between Breath and Sea, offering somatic healing courses, writing consultations and mentorship, I had to forgo my blog. (Nine of my twenty blog posts are still hanging out on the site for a few more weeks.) This shift occurred partly because of time, but mostly because the new website wasn’t designed for regular blog posts and commenting.
While I’ve been reading and writing nonstop, I’ve missed crafting extended articles and essay-ish pieces. So, using this platform, I’m excited in 2023 to continue building a community for parents of exceptional children, folks who are interested in healing from trauma, and those curious about living in a new country. Moreover, I’ll post content for writers, poets, students, and anyone interested in nature, mindfulness, and observations about otherworldly insects, like this flag-footed bug. Ha!
Posting
I will be posting weekly articles that orbit the writing, parenting and mindfulness eco-systems. I’ve been delving into the Gateless Writing Method both as a student and as a teacher, and in the next few years, I’ll be crafting a research project regarding its effectiveness in the community college writing classroom. So, the posts will likely be oscillating between my geeky ponderings about neuroscience and separating craft from peer review/criticism, and answering questions about using CBD/THC to manage our son’s emotional regulation. I’m certain being a beginner at 52 at things like surfing and tarot card reading will make a cameo at some point. Here’s a quick list of the topics that are in my sights:
How and why our early homes become a sort of womb for memory, dream, trauma, and healing.
The Gateless Method applied to creative and non-creative pursuits.
Costa Rica’s style of democracy; desire and disregard for US capitalism.
How living among insects has calmed my nervous system and improved my focus.
Managing a kiddo’s meltdowns by examining the parent’s nervous system (and CBD/THC).
Learning to pop up on a surfboard opened up healing.
I tend to lean on research but love the mystery of intuition so there will be conversations that appeal to and prod a good number of readers. Oh, and lots of book recommendations. I will have occasional free posts, and special content for subscribers. Also for subscribers, there will be discounts on my courses, consultations, and mentoring packages.
Look for the first article post to arrive Wednesday, January 11.
Be well, and Happy New Year.
